Questions and Answers

Remote Online Notary is a process that uses technology to enable documents to be signed and notarized remotely.

Why use Remote Online Notary instead of in-person?

The Remote Online Notary process is a convenient and secure way to get your documents notarized from the comfort and convenience of your home! Remote Online Notary, also known as RON, removes the need to physically meet in person at another location.

Do I have to be located in Pennsylvania to have my document notarized?

No! You can be located anywhere in the world and still be able to have your documents notarized remotely. All you need is a computer with internet!

How secure is the Remote Online Notary process?

The notary session is held within a secured portal to prevent unauthorized access to your data. Encryption, identity verification, and other SSL protocols are in place to protect your information. The digital identity verification process that is used removes the risk of fraud that can occur between parties. RON provides an easier and more convenient method of auditing. The digital platform ensures that document integrity is retained so you don't have to question whether a document was modified after notarization or that it becomes lost.

Are there any specific technical requirements for participating in a RON session?

All that you will need is a computer, webcam, microphone, speakers, and internet connection.  A current and valid Government-Issued identification will be required, such as:

  • State-Issued Driver’s License with Photo

  • State-Issued Identification Card with Photo

  • U.S. Passport with Photo

What types of documents can be notarized through RON?

Available notary public services include authorization of 6 notarial acts:
(1) Take an acknowledgement
(2) Administer an oath and affirmation
(3) Take a verification on oath or affirmation (includes an affidavit)
(4) Witness or attest a signature
(5) Certify or attest a copy or deposition
(6) Note a protest of a negotiable instrument

What are the costs associated with using RON?

A single notarization ("seal") is $21.

Additional seals within the same session are $15 each.

How does the process work if a witness is required?

If the signer has difficulty communicating with the notary during the session, it is possible to have a witness sit with you during the session. The identity of a witness will be verified in the same manner as the customer. Using a witness as a language interpreter is commonly done.
